[MuPPET Version 3.1] 21-Jun-1983 MuPPET is a program that allows Locke users to communicate with and control remote computers by 'connecting' their terminal (or Computer) on the DEC-10 to a remote system specified by the user. This connection could be a physical wire or a phone connection via MODEMS to the remote system. Users can now dial up any computer or MicroProcessor (uP) equipped with an ANSWER type MODEM from any terminal on the DEC-10, and can transmit and receive both ASCII and binary files (Uploading and Downloading). Both the XON- XOFF protocol to regulate data transfers and the Ward Christensen CP/M protocol (MODEM7/XMODEM) are supported. Using MODEM7 protocol transfers in MuPPET is a reliable way of exchanging files with ANY system that is capable of emulating that protocol. MuPPET is hence a replacement for two of our programs: MODEM7 and HOST. It is cheaper to run (costs less than 1/2 as uch as MODEM7), and gives one the flexibility and power to exchange files with and control ANY remote piece of equipment (terminal,printer,computer,etc..) from the DEC-10. MuPPET works as follows. After you LOGIN on the LOCKE system, you may run MuPPET by typing: .R MuPPET -------- A quick list of all commands available will be printed out. More help can be obtained by typing HELP, which gives a one line explanation of each command: Commands are: HELP - Type out this HELP Message. TERMINAL - Connect me to a remote computer, behaving as a TERMINAL. ECHO - Connect me to a remote terminal, ECHOing data like a computer. SEND - SEND a file from the DEC-10 using MODEM7 protocol. RECEIVE - RECEIVE a file to the DEC-10 using MODEM7 protocol. BAT - Blind ASCII Transmit to remote end (uses XON-XOFF Protocol only). LOG - Turn on or off the session LOG to a disk file. MONITOR - Go to DEC10 MONITOR (remote site still active! "CONT" to resume). EXIT - EXIT program: Terminates all connections. (QUIT also works). Options are: STATUS - Type out STATUS of all settings and options. HANGUP - HANGs UP, drops the connection made via TERMINAL or ECHO. PACK - Change disk PACKing format for a file (P1 thru P5). DATA - Change DATA mode for byte transfer (ASCII 7-bit or BINARY 8-bit). DEFINEXIT - DEFINE the user programmable EXIT-CHARACTER. SPEED - Change SPEED of communications line while we're ONLINE. CHECK - Toggle between checksum and CRC error CHECKing modes. Commands to MuPPET are English like. A typical sequence would be to invoke TERMINAL (or ECHO) to connect to a remote site, establish a process on the remote site to send or receive a file, pop back to MuPPET by typing the one EXIT-CHARACTER (a special user-selectable character that gets MuPPET's attention and leaves your communication environment intact) and invoking the appropriate task to RECEIVE, SEND, BAT or LOG the incoming/outgoing data. Upon ending, control is returned to MuPPET's command level. To reconnect to the remote end, a TERM (or ECHO) will immediately connect you with your previously established communication link. Thus you have just controlled a remote uP from the DEC-10. Alternatively, you may wish to transfer files between your local micro and the DEC-10 (ie: your uP is connected to the DEC-10, or you dial in to us). In this case, you do not invoke TERMINAL (or ECHO), but proceed directly by typing SEND or RECEIVE. MuPPET senses that no remote connections exist, and will proceed to transfer files between the DEC-10 and your local computer. Typing TERMINAL to MuPPET gives the response: MuPPET-10> T --- _ MuPPET Virtual Terminal Facility _ Access to: It is waiting for who you wish to talk to. Acceptable remote sites are: 2020 Locke's DECSystem 2020. DIAL Locke's manual operator-intervention-required dial out modem. AUTO Locke's automatic 300/1200 Baud dial-out triple modem. BELL Locke's automatic 300/1200 Bell-212A type dial out modem. For 300 Baud dialout operation, You can use either AUTO or BELL. For 1200 Baud, AUTO handles both VADIC and BELL-212 type modems, while BELL as the name indicates, is only for BELL modems. MuPPET will now prompt for the speed with which to connect the remote site. Valid speeds are 300, 1200, 2400, 4800 and 9600 Baud. Some speeds are not available for all sites. When asking to connect to the AUTO or BELL modems, you will also be asked for the phone number to dial. This number may be a UW Campus phone number (3-9581), a regular phone number (543-9581, 1-206-543-9581) or even a UWATSYSTEM style number. Please note that even though UWATSYSTEM phone numbers are supported, operation is not guaranteed. A record is also kept of all phone numbers dialed out, and users will be billed for any long distance charges they may incur. To exit from communications mode (ie: while talking to the remote), you have to type the user programmable EXIT-CHARACTER, which is initially set to a ^\ (Control-Backslash, ASCII FS character). Print DOC:MuPPET.DOC for all the details on MuPPET's operation and features. Please note that we can be of some assistance in locating a version of MODEM7 for your micro, mini or mainframe. Cost benchmark: On the DEC-10, it cost $1.00 to SEND 100 Blocks of data (64K Bytes), and $1.71 to RECEIVE the same 100 Blocks at 9600 Baud.
