The idea here was to construct a figure from the parts to the right, which was then posted in a wing of the gallery. Use the navigator above to explore. Designers emailed their designations to me (for instance, "head one, body two, legs three") along with any other assembly instructions |

it's been three years since my last update of the corpse-blog, and this will be the last one (i think). i've removed instructions for posting, changed everything to the past tense, and took out the pointless "visual anthropological" analyses. this was all part of my massive, site-wide revision. i'm not sure what sparked it -- i may have not gotten enough sleep one night, and went sort of manic. corpses were posted from 10/01 to 10/03.
[10/9/03]
thanks to leticia for her corpse, posted in the north wing (formerly the "roommate wing"). with this submission, the north wing becomes the "miscellaneous" wing, or maybe the "roommates and strangers" wing. leticia's corpse was the first i've received completely unsolicited -- a complete stranger browsing the www and happenening upon my corpse page. i guess it makes sense, but i just never thought it'd happen. so, i want to karmically encourage more of this by posting leticia's corpse right away. thanks also to john and ana for their posts -- ana's makes the north wing a "strangers, ex-roomates and girlfriend" wing...john gets added to the west wing (friends). leticia's corpse inspired ana to make one, and inspired me to ask john to resubmit his parts (he had done so a while ago, but i never posted them).
by the way -- forgetting to post someone's corpse is clearly part of the project in that it relfects on the futility and banality of...oh i give up. you should have talked to me two years ago...man.

thanks to "poo-bee" (formerly "mark miller") for her/his corpse. i really went all out on the analysis (it's in the west wing). also, i had to search for some new parts in order to complete "poo-bee"'s corpse (since the parts s/he sent me were somewhat screwed up, i simply searched for similar parts that were friendlier to corpse-construction). i ended up liking her/his/my parts enough to add them permanently to the generator (head/body/legs 8).
[2/24/03]
updated the "info" window to reflect the galleries' segue from art into visual anthropology.
[2/23/03]
thanks to jay and megan for their corpses. megan inadvertently duplicated andy's corpse (andy's is in the north wing, megan's is in the south). i think the parts both andy and megan used (the bird's head, hello-kitty torso, and female-underwear lower body) are the most popular choices for their respective categories. jay specified that his heads be arranged like janus, facing in opposite directions.

i've been wanting to do this almost since the project's inception, and i finally got around to it: i posted psychological analyses based on the contributor's corpse. simply click on a corpse to read a unique analysis of it and its creator. i also initiated another call for participation in the project: it's only appropriate that the others analyze me and my corpse. i giddily anticipate replies...

being inspired by eric and his corpse (see below), i modified the generator slightly to better allow for people who opt to construct their own corpses by making images of the full-sized parts available with pop-up windows. eric used only the thumbnails to contruct his corpse, so that's all the more impressive.
[2/19/03]
thanks to eric balderston for his post (i had long ago given up any hopes of new submissions). eric is the first person who designed and assembled his own corpse from my parts (some altered and some as-is) and a few of his own, completely ignoring the constraints of certain parts being indicated for certain uses.
one of the pillars of dada and the "exquisite corpse" mentality is circumventing the rules, and for this i applaud eric; i think his corpse, which he titled "egotick," might be the coolest one in the gallery. also, i didn't have to do any work putting it together, so he earned brownie points that way.
[5/13/02]
thanks to molly carter for her post. notice, in the family (south) wing, the remarkable consistency of corpse parts selection. sometimes i think it would be fun to post a psychological study and analysis along with each corpse. what cognitive and psychodynamic mechanisms exist in a person that would lead them to choose hello kitty's body over a burn victim's?
[5/5/02]
thanks to omari ruiz for his post. with this addition, the north wing ceases to be a repository for andy bridges, and is transformed into the official roommates wing.
[4/24/02]
thanks to dan jenkins for his post; he is the third person (including myself) to use the infernal head of baphomet.
[4/10/02]
thanks to "josh" for his submission. even after all this time, it's still nice to get a unique combination in the mail. quite honestly, i wasn't sure if i'd ever get any new submissions; "josh" proved me wrong with his dedication to artistic ntegrity.
[2/8/02]
wow, i just revamped the entire gallery, making it more economical in design and in better agreement with the rest of my portfolio. it's kind of shocking to look at it, especialy since it had been sitting there unmolested on the umbc server for six months.
[1/25/02]
thanks to "pirate kittens of america" for their/its/his/her submission. not much going on in the gallery these days; i discovered a few months back that certain pc's running internet explorer won't display the generator properly, and fixed that problem. otherwise, aside from pkoa's addition, i'm not getting any more corpse schematics or parts in the mail. how sad.
[10/25/01]
one final, minor repair to the navigator so it looks the same as one travels from room to room. my roommate has just christened the north wing, and also submitted the first additional corpse part! thanks, andy. follow his shining example of spiritual purity.
to show my gratitude [despite the enormous 500k jpeg he sent me that i had to download over dial-up], i'm giving him [at least temporarily] a gallery wing of his own: the formerly closed north wing.
as far as the grouping of corpses into particular wings:
east: 388 classmates
west: non-umbc friends
south:family
north: andy [actually, miscellaneous]
[10/23/01]
i'm not getting any more corpse schematics in the mail, but maybe this is appropriate, since the project is due tomorrow. i suppose if i want more submissions, i need to do more mass emailing.
as one final change to the gallery structure, i made separate rooms for my non-umbc friends, my classmates in art 388, and my family.
maybe some time in the future, as james (see west wing) suggested, it might be nice to have the participants' choices submitted to me with a form.
[10/20/01]
thanks mark, james and jin for their corpses - sorry yours is so deformed, james, but your parts were difficult to work with. it's time to start considering a method to the madness of which corpses go in which particular wing. but later; it's 2:15am.
[10/19/01]
thanks to"alex" for his/her post. i believe there are now five pairs of female undies in use - that's over half the corpses. i think some drastic measures are going to have to be taken if i don't start getting some more variety here.
changes have been made to the gallery; a new navigation system has been installed, since the creation of new wings was needed to accommodate additional corpses.
thanks to ME for MY corpse (see south wing).
[10/18/01]
i think another factor in artists' frequent use of certain parts is that some parts look more human, less abstract, or tend to be more recognizable, some parts having been shrunk more than others. pity. anyway, thanks to chang for her posting.
new analysis: frames are for the substrata.
I'm debating whether or not to create a corpse of my own.
it turns out that really, this generator needs to be run on a "primitive interface;" a human touch is needed in carefully joining the selected parts, and making itty bitty changes to the images in order to make them fit. so ha.
[10/17/01]
the first four corpses are up...many thanks to jones and anon for their contributions and artistry. i think this ongoing comments section calls for frames.
ok...now the first six are up; thanks also to lee and ogul. hello kitty's torso is proving to be very popular. i wonder how important an issue gender is going to turn out to be? the "gendered" body parts are being very well used as well.
[10/16/01]
hey, thanks to robinson and miller for sending me their selections. i have to work tonight, so i won't be able to post their creations until wednesday evening. but i do appreciate it.
I'm thinking of including more under the figures besides just the name of the artist; whatever other text they choose to send me, or maybe some non-sensitive information about the sender (?) as always, feedback appreciated.
ok...i just thought of something. what if two people arrive at the same corpse? i suppose in that case I'll post the first one.
[10/15/01]
any new information will always appear here, below the thumbnails. I'm not savvy enough to set this project up so one can click on the thumbnails and automatically send that particular info to me (i.e. what the thumbnail is of), let alone change my page via cgi/perl or some such nonsense, so please bear with me.
hopefully I'll be able to post corpses as i receive them in the mail, without too much delay...
