18 jun 06 "What is your opinion on Web sites like Meathenge?" what for pete's sake is "meathenge"? oh, wait -- i think i remember, without looking it up or going to the url. if i recall correctly, "meat-henge" is a replica of stonehenge built out of slabs of meat. let's confirm this... oh. dissappointment. it's not a site devoted to that, but is rather just a meat-oriented photo-blog. but wouldn't a real meathenge be cool? who wants to help me build a meathenge? i read a bit of "biggles"'s (blog author) meat-blog, and didn't see any recipes. it's mainly just a series of photographs of cooked meat. but it's done with enthusiasm, and some of the subjects sound and look really good. but i had such a letdown, expecting to see a Meathenge as it should have been. i shouldn't be quick to slap on a "banal" label; the blog is well-written, has a relatively interesting (especially to foodies) and unusual subject matter, and enjoys a few full articles with pics, too. ok, let's read the "about" section: Grilled meat, smoked meat, roasted meat and photography go way back for Biggles. I have pictures of the food I've been preparing and eating for a bit over twenty years. biggles goes on to say that the name, meathenge, did indeed come from something very much like my own fantasy of a few paragraphs up. unfortunately, there aren't any pictures of the original, or even a reconstruction. so, yeah....what do i think of sites like this? blogs? blogs about food? sites about food? i don't think i'd be a regular visitor or anything, but i guess they're pretty cool, i guess. heh. it's hypocritical, but i've never enjoyed reading a blog. me, i pretty much live on wikipedia, google, gmail, netflix, occasionally slashdot, and very occasionally google news. sometimes i read the washington DC craigslist "casual encounters" section for fun and essential observation of the human condition. i also occasionally hit the gi joe PSA revamps, tourrettes guy, fyadhaus, and skeletor vs. beastman (WARNING: OFFENSIVE, HORRIBLE, DO NOT VISIT ANY OF THESE). no meat blogs, though. when i want a recipe for $FOOD, i google `$FOOD recipe`, and get good results. purposes of the web: recipes, song lyrics, and porn. even though meathenge isn't an amazing spectacle or consideration to me, i like to see someone like biggles putting so much time and energy into his blog -- it's a good-looking site, and it conveys the personal passion of biggles. this of course brings me to probably my most frequently-ranted rant about websites and webmasters: nobody cares about "personal effort, creative" sites. ie, personal pages, personal writing, personal art, and blogs. they're just not interesting to anyone except the creator. and it's frustrating to those webmasters, those of them who have't been hardened, to invest hours of work and then have someone click through it all in 15 seconds, barely noticing. poor biggles. let me go back to his site and read a little more. maybe i'll even write to him. |
