And something you haven't made before." a piece of "ASCII art" is an image made from keyboard characters. no more, no less. the most intricate ASCII drawings i'm willing to make are of a head and a winged-spotted-toothed-horse-dragon-antenna-thing. i've made heads before, but not this head:

now leave me alone. making ASCII art by hand is a lot of work, and is sort of ungratifying. the drawings together took maybe 10-20 mintues to make; i'm not going to spend an entire day on some ASCII art, as the subitter specified. nor am i going to make said ASCII art complex, per se. you might think i would, after following orders to make the potato-horror, but nah -- this is as good as you're going to get. sorry. here's the dragon-thing:

i drew the picture (it used to be my site logo, years ago), but i converted it to ASCII with a windows program called "ascgen". ascgen is a great little tool, but unfortunately it is no longer available. the program is contained within a single .exe file (1.4 MB), the interface is easy (drag-and-drop), and the output is quite configurable. here it is, if you want it. it was free in the first place, so no one is going to arrest you or me. i hope that link doesn't generate torrential traffic and cause my site to go offline. i doubt it. if i see a blue screen of death, i'll take it down. black-and-white line drawings convert best. photos work, but you have to crank the bright and contrast way up (an ascgen feature). check it out (squinting is helpful):

i tried to convert a landscape (from my oregon pics, taken during a trip, which, by the way, no-one asked me about, even though i specifically said 'you can ask me oregon-related or camping-related questions when i return', and i was all set to post my photos and/or tell you all about culture, geography, or even my trip, but NO -- you went and asked me about turning a straight person gay), but it didn't turn out well. if you scroll back up this page, bottom to top, you'll see a continuum of complexity in the images. unintentional, but a good demonstration of different flavors of ASCII art. |
